About: Stephen Brown is Professor of Learning Technologies and Director of Knowledge Media Design at De Montfort University, UK (http://kmd.dmu.ac.uk). His career includes course design, research and tutoring for the Open University; Head of Distance Learning at BT; Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Engineering Design; Director of the International Institute for Electronic Library Research, De Montfort University; Senior Technology Adviser to the JISC; and President of the Association for Learning Technology.

At the Open University he helped design the UK’s first educational interactive video disc. At BT he introduced multimedia based training methods. For the JISC Technologies Centre he conducted technology forecasting and assessments on behalf of the HE and FE sectors. At De Montfort University he led the development of the Electronic Campus; successfully bid for JISC funds to develop one of the first Managed Learning Environments in the UK; and directed pioneering digital library research projects. His research centres around understanding and applying information design principles and learning theories to support knowledge construction in the context of new media technologies.
