The realities of teaching and learning with web conferencing: The realities of teaching and learning with web conferencing: challenges and issues -- 248 -- Workshop - Some notes from the final plenary discussion (final 10 minutes of the workshop); no claims for accuracy: Summary of the final plenary discussion, picking up on issues raised in small group discussions: Challenge: Interaction & activating participants Different conversations go on at the same time - not expected by tutors when starting with web conferencing  >> potential solution: have a teaching assistant, make use of recordings Are tutors threatened by these multi-conversations?  Eg text chat back channel - tutor is no longer sage on the stage might fear a loss of control >> takes courage and might initially feel uncomfortable Can breakout rooms activate learners? - perhaps when breakout-rooms are self-initiated, some people are just more passive/quiet - experience report: instead of breakout rooms, one lecturer used simple text chat successfully - it is difficult for some people to talk - "Minimalist" students won't participate in breakout rooms either Challenge: Tutor confidence/competence - building confidence & competence needs a variety of approaches - can take a lot of time to get there - institutional award schemes can be useful, but there are mixed reactions to them - some curriculum areas lend themselves better to web conferencing - use web conferencing in other contexts outside of teaching, ie meetings - technical issues can be addressed in guides - except for hardware issues (headsets etc) - give people a trial beforehand and try to establish some level of personal support people can turn to if required
